Sattva is a work focused in the concept of tuned resonance. Sound materials are shaped using advanced filtering techniques based on the analysis of acoustic sounds – imbuing the processed sounds with characteristics of the sounds used to create the modeling filters. In this way, the concept for synthesis has some affinity to time-varying filtering and vocoding.

This fourteen-minute work is a part of a set of works currently under development entitled “Pattern Language.” This large project is concerned with the translation of visual patterning into sonic materials – textures, gestures and forms. Images such as snowflakes, spider webs, micro-photographics, mathematical and geometric shapes and the like are mapped to frequency and amplitude space in order to inform additive synthesis and also the development of musical gestures and forms.

Sound materials used in the composition include violin and viola samples, percussion sounds, sounds from nature and also drones and spectra of purely synthetic origin.

Sattva takes a philosophical proposal from the Vedic tradition and is a state of mind what resonates with steadiness, calm and peace. The materials of the music, and its overall form and design, are considered in terms of the purity of “illuminated” sounds brought about through the process of resonance filtering and the direct modality of additive synthesis.
