It is arguable what the first work of literary science fiction actually is. For many it is Francis Bacon’s utopian vision The New Atlantis, often an inspiration for composers and artists. For others, the ideas of pre-Baconian writers hold resonance. Kepler’s novel of 1608, Somnium (which means “The Dream”) was an inspiration for this composition – Magaie Naturalis (Natural Magic).

Magaie Naturalis is conceived as a “space-time” musical work; spatially composed in 8-channel surround sound and developed of layers of overlapping sound structures. The work eschews commonplace musical interactions and gestural orientations of materials in favor a large-scale mosaic design of interacting sound masses of varying density and morphological design.

Ambisonics techniques, often articulated using stochastic methods, were applied to the sound materials for dynamic spatialization in the octophonic array. The stereo reduction of the work uses the same ambicsonically encoded materials as the 8-channel version and, as a result, retains a large measure of the impression of the spatial design in two channel playback.
